Input Group

Attach icons, buttons, and kbd hints to inputs for search bars, URL fields, and chat composers — with neobrutalist borders and shadows.

import { Search } from "lucide-react"

import {

The input group wraps an input or textarea together with its addons — icons, inline text, buttons, keyboard hints — inside one bordered control. It's an in-house composition of this library's Input, Textarea, and Button, styled to the neobrutalist recipe: thick borders, hard shadows, and bold type.

Reach for it when:

  • Search fields — a leading search icon plus a trailing ⌘K hint or clear button.
  • Prefixed and suffixed inputs — fixed https://, @, or .com text so users type only the variable part.
  • Chat and prompt composers — a textarea with a block-end toolbar of buttons and a send action.

Usage

import {
  InputGroup,
  InputGroupAddon,
  InputGroupButton,
  InputGroupInput,
  InputGroupText,
  InputGroupTextarea,
} from "@/components/ui/input-group"
<InputGroup>
  <InputGroupInput placeholder="Search..." />
  <InputGroupAddon>
    <SearchIcon />
  </InputGroupAddon>
</InputGroup>

Composition

Use the following composition to build an InputGroup:

InputGroup
├── InputGroupInput or InputGroupTextarea
├── InputGroupAddon
├── InputGroupButton
└── InputGroupText

Align

Use the align prop on InputGroupAddon to position the addon relative to the input.

inline-start

Use align="inline-start" to position the addon at the start of the input. This is the default.

import { SearchIcon } from "lucide-react"

import {

inline-end

Use align="inline-end" to position the addon at the end of the input.

import { EyeOffIcon } from "lucide-react"

import {

block-start

Use align="block-start" to position the addon above the input.

import { CopyIcon, FileCodeIcon } from "lucide-react"

import {

block-end

Use align="block-end" to position the addon below the input.

import {
  Field,
  FieldDescription,

Custom Input

Add the data-slot="input-group-control" attribute to your custom input for automatic focus state handling.

Here's an example of a custom resizable textarea from a third-party library.

"use client"

import TextareaAutosize from "react-textarea-autosize"

RTL

To enable RTL support in Neobrutalism.com, see the RTL configuration guide.

"use client"

import * as React from "react"

Accessibility

There's no ARIA widget pattern for input groups — the wrapper renders role="group" so assistive tech associates the addons with the control, and keyboard access is native: Tab reaches the input and any InputGroupButton in DOM order, which is why addons belong after the input (positioned visually with align). Two things stay on you: addon text like https:// is visual, not a programmatic label, so the input still needs a <Label> or aria-label; and icon-only buttons need an aria-label — clicking an addon focuses the input, but that's a pointer convenience, not a keyboard path.
